- Cloud Concepts — 24%. The value proposition (trading capital expense for variable expense), elasticity vs scalability, the six Well-Architected pillars, migration ideas at a name-recognition level. Business outcomes, not architecture.
- Security and Compliance — 30%. The biggest domain. The shared responsibility model (which side owns what), IAM basics (users vs groups vs roles, MFA, protecting the root user), and which service does what — GuardDuty for threat detection, Inspector for vulnerabilities, Macie for sensitive data, KMS for keys.
- Cloud Technology and Services — 34%. The other big one. Picking the right core service: EC2 vs Lambda, S3 vs EBS vs EFS, RDS vs DynamoDB, plus the networking and integration basics (VPC, CloudFront, SQS vs SNS).
- Billing, Pricing, and Support — 12%. On-Demand vs Reserved vs Savings Plans vs Spot, the free tier, Cost Explorer vs Budgets, and the support plan tiers.

The three traps that catch beginners
1. Shared responsibility confusion. The exam returns to this constantly. AWS secures the cloud (hardware, hypervisor, physical facilities); you secure what you put in it (IAM configuration, data, and — on EC2 — the guest OS patching). The trap: with managed services like RDS, AWS takes over OS patching, so the customer's responsibility shrinks. Read carefully whether the scenario uses EC2 (you patch) or a managed service (AWS patches).
2. Sibling-service mix-ups. GuardDuty vs Inspector vs Macie. EBS vs EFS vs S3. Cost Explorer (analyze past spend) vs Budgets (alert on future spend) vs Pricing Calculator (estimate before you deploy). The exam offers all the siblings as options — knowing the one specific job of each is the whole game.
3. Pricing-model matching. Steady 3-year workload → Reserved/Savings Plans. Unpredictable short-term → On-Demand. Fault-tolerant batch that can be interrupted → Spot (up to ~90% off). The scenario always hints which one; the distractors are the other three.
A realistic 2–3 week plan
- Day 1: take the free diagnostic — 10 questions, 10 minutes, and you'll know which of the four domains needs work.
