The AWS Certification Path in 2026: Which Exam to Take First (and Next)

A complete, no-fluff guide to the AWS certification path — every tier from Cloud Practitioner to Professional, which cert to start with for your role, what each exam costs, and how long each takes. Updated for 2026.

If you've searched "AWS certification path," you've probably seen a dozen tangled diagrams and come away more confused than when you started. This guide fixes that. By the end you'll know exactly which AWS exam to take first for your role, what the whole ladder looks like, what each exam costs, and roughly how long each takes to prepare for.

No prerequisites are enforced by AWS — you can start anywhere. But "can" and "should" are different questions, and the order you pick determines whether the first exam feels like a fair fight or a wall.


The four tiers, in one table

AWS organizes its certifications into four levels. Here's the whole map:

All exams are scenario-based multiple choice, delivered online or at a test center, scored 100–1000. Foundational exams pass at 700; Associate and above pass at 720. There are no hard prerequisites — you don't need Cloud Practitioner before an Associate — but the tiers reflect genuine jumps in difficulty.

The two most common first certs are Cloud Practitioner and Solutions Architect – Associate, and the choice between them is really about your starting point. If AWS terminology (regions, IAM, EC2, S3) is still fuzzy, start foundational — it pays for itself by making the Associate exam readable. If you already deploy on AWS at work, you can jump straight to an Associate and skip ahead.

Foundational tier — where most people should begin

Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) — $100, 90 minutes, pass 700

The on-ramp. It tests four things at a concept level, never implementation:

  1. Cloud Concepts (24%) — the value of cloud (CapEx→OpEx), elasticity, the Well-Architected pillars.
  2. Security and Compliance (30%) — the shared responsibility model, IAM basics, which service does what (GuardDuty vs Inspector vs Macie).
  3. Cloud Technology and Services (34%) — picking the right core service: EC2 vs Lambda, S3 vs EBS vs EFS, RDS vs DynamoDB.
  4. Billing, Pricing, and Support (12%) — On-Demand vs Reserved vs Spot, the support tiers, Cost Explorer vs Budgets.

If you're a non-engineer, this is the AWS cert for you — no scripting, no console mechanics, just "which approach fits this business need." Most people pass in 2–3 weeks of evenings.

AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) — $100, 90 minutes, pass 700

Same tier, same "no coding" promise, but pointed at AI/ML and generative-AI concepts — RAG vs fine-tuning, Amazon Bedrock, responsible AI, model selection. It's the most accessible AI credential AWS offers, and it pairs well with any Associate cert. We covered it in depth in what the AI Practitioner exam actually tests.

Associate tier — the certs employers ask for

Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) — $150, 130 minutes, pass 720

The flagship. When a job posting says "AWS certification preferred," this is almost always the one. It tests architecture trade-offs across four domains — secure, resilient, high-performing, and cost-optimized design — as scenario questions: "a company needs X under constraint Y — which design?" Expect 4–6 weeks of prep if you have some AWS exposure. We wrote up the 100 things that trip people up on the SAA.

Developer – Associate (DVA-C02) — $150, 130 minutes, pass 720

The builder's exam. Same shape as the SAA but a developer's perspective — you're the one writing and debugging the code: Lambda patterns, DynamoDB data modeling, API Gateway, SQS/SNS/EventBridge, CI/CD, IAM roles for applications. If you build on AWS for a living, a lot of it is your Tuesday. Here's how DVA-C02 differs from the SAA.

The other three Associates

SysOps Administrator (SOA-C02) leans operational — monitoring, automation, deployment, and it has historically included hands-on lab components. Data Engineer (DEA-C01) and Machine Learning Engineer (MLA-C01) are the newer role-based Associates for data pipelines and ML workflows respectively.

Professional and Specialty — the deep end

The Professional certs (Solutions Architect Professional, DevOps Engineer Professional) are a real step up: longer exams, denser scenarios, and an expectation of roughly two years of hands-on AWS. Don't rush here — a Professional cert on a shaky Associate foundation is a painful, expensive retake.

Specialty certs (Advanced Networking, Security, and an evolving set) go deep on a single domain. The specialty lineup changes over time — AWS retires and replaces individual specialty exams — so always confirm the current exam code on the official AWS certification page before you book. Take these when your job is that specialty, not to collect badges.

A realistic sequence for most people

For a working engineer aiming at a cloud role, the highest-ROI path is:

  1. Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) — 2–3 weeks. Builds the base vocabulary. (Skip only if you already deploy on AWS confidently.)
  2. Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-C03) — 4–6 weeks. The résumé cert.
  3. A second Associate or a Professional — Developer if you code, SysOps if you operate, or straight to Solutions Architect Professional if you have the hands-on time.

Career switchers and non-engineers should treat Cloud Practitioner as the destination, not just a step — for many roles (sales engineering, cloud finance, project management on cloud teams) it's exactly the right credential on its own.
