How AWS exam scoring actually works

Every AWS certification exam reports a scaled score from 100 to 1000, with the pass mark at 720 for associate-level exams and 700 for foundational ones. The scale exists because AWS runs multiple exam forms of varying difficulty and statistically equates them — so there is no fixed “number of questions you can miss.”

Two details most candidates miss: scoring is compensatory (no per-domain minimum — only the total matters), and 15 of the 65 questions are unscored pretest items you can’t identify. Together they mean your prep should follow the blueprint weights, not your comfort: a percentage point of accuracy in SAA-C03’s 30%-weight security domain is worth 1.5× one in the 20%-weight cost domain — which is exactly what the lever list above computes.

What score do you need to pass an AWS certification exam?

AWS reports results on a scaled score from 100 to 1000. The associate-level exams (SAA-C03, DVA-C02) require 720; the foundational exams (CLF-C02, AIF-C01) require 700. That's roughly 72% and 70% — but because the score is statistically equated, the exact raw percentage varies slightly between exam forms.

Do I need to pass every domain individually?

No. AWS exams use compensatory scoring: only the overall scaled score matters, so a strong domain can carry a weak one. That's exactly why weighting your practice accuracy by domain matters — being great at a domain worth 18% of the exam can't fully rescue being weak in one worth 30%.

Is 70% on practice tests enough to pass?

Usually not comfortably. 70% flat accuracy maps to right around the pass mark, and exam-day conditions — time pressure, unfamiliar phrasing, nerves — typically cost a few points versus untimed practice. Most people who pass comfortably were scoring 80%+ on full-length timed mocks beforehand.

How accurate is this calculator?

It's an honest estimate, not a prediction. AWS's exact scaled-score transform isn't public, so this maps your blueprint-weighted accuracy linearly onto the 100-1000 scale. Treat scores within about 40 points of the pass mark as a coin flip and act accordingly. A timed, blueprint-weighted diagnostic is a far better measurement than self-reported accuracy.

Are 15 of the 65 questions really unscored?

Yes — every AWS exam includes 15 unscored pretest questions mixed invisibly among the 50 scored ones. You can't tell which are which, so answer everything. It also means one brutal question you've never seen may simply not count.
